Security tips whilst your away on holiday

Now that spring is upon us and the weather is heating up its almost time to enjoy that well deserved summer holiday. It’s important to also remember that domestic burglary’s actually increase by around 10% during the summer time. From our experience sunshine seems to make home owners more relaxed with security compared to the dark nights of winter.

However there’s preventative measures that can be taken to ensure your home is as secure as it can be whilst your enjoying your holiday.

Our first tip would be refraining from posting on social media about your holiday plans and location. Gone are the days when a burglar has to prowl the street to look for an empty house. Now they can simply have a quick look on Facebook to find out when your on holiday, where your going and when you are coming home.

Leave a key with a very trusted neighbour, friend or family member who is willing to come in and move the build up of mail to somewhere that’s not visible.

Try to leave a Veichle outside the house or on the driveway.

Make sure a few of the lights are left on light timers. Try to stagger the times they are active so they don’t all illuminate at the same time and don’t all go out at the same time. Try to make it appear as natural as possible.

All windows should have key operated locks. Many times we see a window that already has a key operated lock fitted but is not actually locked with the key. A typical upvc Window for example will hold securely tight by moving the handle into the correct position which will help prevent the Window being prised open. However this doesn't stop the glass being broken and the handle lifted if it hasn't been locked using the key as well.

Sash jammers can be added to upvc windows and doors as well as an additional extra. These can be fixed to the door frame to prevent doors and windows being pushed open even if they are unlocked. These however are an extra measure and shouldn’t be used on there own as a locking device. They should be combined with a good quality locking system.

A good home alarm system is a must. A lot of modern alarm systems can be monitored from a smart phone allowing you to arm and disarm the system remotely and also receive notifications of alarm activity. Our Risco Agility 3 is a great example of this type of system.

CCTV is a great addition to home security. With these systems getting better all the time and the cost reducing, now is a great time to invest in a CCTV system. Many systems can now be linked with a smart phone allowing you to see a live feed of the cameras from wherever you are in the world at any time using an internet connection. Also many cameras are now high definition meaning crystal clear footage.

Good locks are one of the most important features in any home. Upvc and composite doors should be fitted with a multi point locking system and an anti snap euro cylinder with minimum of a TS007 3 star rating. For maximum protection a Sold Secure Diamond Standard cylinder can be fitted. For wooden doors which use a mortice lock a BS3621 mortice lock should be used. Ideally more than one BS3621 mortice lock would be fitted on the same door.

Many burglary’s could be prevented with a little bit of thought and extra attention to detail when it comes to home security. We hope this information may help you prevent a burglary whilst away on holiday this summer. If you would like any more info don’t hesitate to contact 1st Defence Locksmiths Leeds.
