Can I Get My Locks Changed For Free?

In some circumstances you may be able to get your locks changed for free, but it depends on why the locks need changing and who is responsible for the property.

Most people would need to pay for an emergency locksmith themselves. However, here's a few situations where you might be able to get your locks changed for free.

Home insurance 

If you've been burgled or your keys were stolen, some UK home insurance policies will cover the cost of a lock change as part of your claim. Sometimes the insurance company will send somebody to replace the locks. On other occasions you might need to find and pay your own locksmith and claim the money back. Keep your crime reference number and get an itemised invoice from your locksmith for the claim. Please note you might also have to pay an insurance excess depending on your policy. 

Landlords 

If you're renting in Leeds and your locks are faulty, unsafe, or don't meet the standard your tenancy agreement requires, your landlord is usually responsible for the cost, not you. Citizens Advice explains the responsibilities of landlords and tenants when repairs are needed. However, usually you can't just book your own locksmith and expect your landlord to pay. You would need to confirm with them that they are willing to pay and find out if you need to find your own locksmith or if they already have a preferred company.  

Domestic abuse support 

If you're fleeing domestic abuse, support may be available with emergency accommodation and making your home safer. Some charities and local authorities may also be able to arrange extra security measures, including emergency lock changes, depending on your circumstances.

Council Housing  

For Leeds City Council properties, lock changes are usually covered for free if the lock is faulty through no fault of your own.
